Kindergarten Music

The Kindergarten Music course offers our youngest learners an enchanting introduction to the world of music, guided by the principles of the Kodály philosophy. Rooted in the belief that every child is inherently musical, this course is designed to ignite a love for music through joyful exploration, singing, and interactive play.

In addition to embracing the Kodály approach, students will have the special opportunity to participate in a devotional performance once a year, fostering a sense of spirituality and community through music.

Kindergarten Music

Course Goals and Objectives:

1. **Singing and Vocal Exploration:**
   – Cultivate a love for singing through age-appropriate songs, chants, and playful vocal exercises.
   – Develop basic vocal techniques, including pitch matching, expressive singing, and breath awareness.

2. **Kodály Methodology:**
   – Introduce foundational Kodály principles, emphasizing sequential learning and the integration of movement to enhance musical understanding.

3. **Rhythmic Play and Movement:**
   – Explore rhythm through interactive games, body percussion, and creative movement activities.
   – Use movement to connect kinesthetic experiences with basic rhythmic concepts.

6. **Creative Expression:**
   – Encourage creative expression through simple improvisation, movement, and exploration of various sound-making materials.
   – Provide a supportive environment for children to express themselves through music.

7. **Musical Storytelling:**
   – Incorporate musical storytelling to engage children in imaginative narratives accompanied by simple melodies and rhythmic elements.
   – Connect music with storytelling to enhance listening skills and comprehension.

8. **Listening and Appreciation:**
   – Develop active listening skills by exposing children to a variety of musical styles, instruments, and sounds.
   – Foster discussions on the emotions and stories conveyed through the music.

9. **Devotional Performance:**
   – Prepare for and participate in a special devotional performance once a year, creating a musical experience that celebrates themes of spirituality and community.
   – Explore simple sacred and devotional music, connecting music with expressions of faith and unity.

10. **Lifelong Love for Music:**
    – Instill a lifelong love for music by creating a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment that celebrates each child’s unique musical journey.

Assessment and Grading:
– Assessment in a Kindergarten music class will focus on participation, engagement, and the development of basic musical skills. Evaluation will be conducted through observation, informal assessments, and teacher-student interactions. The emphasis is on creating a positive and nurturing environment that fosters a love for music and encourages exploration and play in alignment with the Kodály philosophy.

Mrs. Katy Francom

Katy Francom graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a Master of Music Education. Prior to this she graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She has completed three levels of Kodály certification through Intermuse Academy at BYU. In addition to three years of teaching elementary music in Loveland, Colorado, she has 25 years of experience teaching private piano and voice lessons, and she has been the director of seven ward choirs! Katy has four amazing grown children and a wonderful extended family. She loves to read, garden, hike, and sing at the piano.
