Course Description

The devotional class is designed to help students deepen their understanding of the scriptures and strengthen their faith through the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The class follows the “Come Follow Me” manual, a comprehensive guide that explores the doctrines and principles found in the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price.

Each week, participants will engage in guided scripture study, personal reflection, and group discussions. The class encourages thoughtful questions, shared insights, and application of gospel principles to daily life.

The course culminates in a Devotional Performance held at the AHS Salt Lake City’s performance hall, where students will present spiritual messages, music, and other devotional expressions. This event provides an opportunity for parents, friends, and the wider community to participate and support the students’ spiritual journey.

Sixth Grade Devotional

The class president will welcome students to class and conduct the first 30 minutes of the day. The day begins by preparing spiritually through song, prayer, repeating “The Pledge of Allegiance,” hearing a spiritual thought from a peer, and working on their weekly memorization. The spiritual thought follows the following pattern: TTIP (Teach, Testify, Invite, Promise). Students prepare for their yearly devotional during this time and will journal using the 4-Ring process (Research, Reason, Relate, Record). The teacher also uses this time to share or teach what they feel inspired to share.

Mrs. Mary Gilmore

Mary Gilmore received a Master of Education in Elementary Education from Utah State University and her Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University in Elementary Education with a Minor in Music. Serving a mission to England was a highlight of her life. After teaching Elementary school for seven years (two years in second grade and five years in fifth grade), she stayed home to raise her family. She and her husband Rob have six children, and they love to play games together as well share their love of music with others. Mary has enjoyed teaching piano lessons for over 20 years. She loves the outdoors and watching her children play soccer. She worked at Oakcrest girls camp as a counselor, assistant director, and director and loved it! She has a strong desire to help each student feel successful and loved in a safe learning environment. She is thrilled to be a sixth-grade teacher at American Heritage in Salt Lake City and to be able to share her love for learning along with her testimony of Jesus Christ.
