Course Description

In this course, students will learn to skip count by 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s, 10’s, 25’s, and 100’s; compare and order numbers; identify ordinal position to tenth; identify sorting and patterning rules; solve routine and nonroutine problems; master all basic addition and subtraction facts; master multiplication facts to 5; add and subtract two-digit numbers; picture and name fractions; measure to the nearest centimeter, foot, and half inch; compare volume; compare and measure mass; measure perimeter and area; tell time to five-minute intervals; count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters; identify geometric solids; identify lines of symmetry; identify angles; tally; and create, read, and write observations from real graphs, pictographs, bar graphs, Venn diagrams, and line graphs.

Second Grade Math

Objectives

Second graders will learn math concepts through daily instruction, practice, and homework. When appropriate, manipulatives and other hands-on work are utilized. In addition to being able to discuss their learning, students will demonstrate their understanding of these topics through an eighty percent (80%) or better score on the math assessments given after every five lessons. In addition, they will be able to correctly demonstrate knowledge during the periodic oral assessments.

Mrs. Sara Fenn

Sara Fenn has a bachelor’s degree in Health Science from Brigham Young University. After raising her six children, she went back to school and got a master’s degree in education from the University of Utah and taught second, fourth and sixth grades. Sara left teaching when her husband, Jerry, was called to preside over the Illinois Chicago Mission and then the Salt Lake City Headquarters Mission. Sara is excited to be teaching second grade students where she can share her testimony as well as academic principles. Sara enjoys spending time with her 19 grandchildren, cooking, quilting and traveling. She is thrilled to be part of the American Heritage School team.
