Course Description

Pre-requisite: Algebra 1

This course introduces students to fundamental concepts in chemistry, including atomic structure, chemical bonding, stoichiometry, thermodynamics, and chemical reactions. Through a combination of theoretical lessons and laboratory experiments, students will explore the properties and behaviors of matter and learn to apply chemical principles to solve problems.

The course covers a range of topics, such as the periodic table, chemical equations, acids and bases, and gas laws. Students will develop skills in scientific inquiry, data analysis, and safety in the laboratory. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of basic chemistry and be prepared for further studies in science or related fields. This course is ideal for students with an interest in science and a desire to understand the chemical foundations of the world around them.

Course Objectives

Unit 1: Introduction to Chemistry

    • Learning units of measurement and significant figures.
    • Using dimensional analysis to solve problems.

Unit 2: Atomic Structure and Periodic Table

  • Atomic Structure
    • Exploring the structure of atoms and subatomic particles.
    • Learning about isotopes and electron configuration.
  • The Periodic Table
    • Understanding the periodic table and periodic trends.
    • Exploring groups, periods, and periodic properties.

Unit 3: Chemical Bonding

  • Types of Chemical Bonds
    • Understanding ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds.
    • Learning about bond polarity and molecular shapes.
  • Molecular Geometry and VSEPR Theory
    • Exploring molecular shapes and bond angles.
    • Applying VSEPR theory to predict molecular geometry.

Unit 4: Chemical Reactions and Stoichiometry

  • Chemical Reactions
    • Identifying different types of chemical reactions (synthesis, decomposition, combustion, etc.).
    • Writing and balancing chemical equations.

    • Exploring the pH scale and acid-base reactions.
  • Gas Laws
    • Exploring the relationships between pressure, volume, and temperature.
    • Applying gas laws to solve problems (Boyle’s Law, Charles’s Law, etc.).

Unit 7: Laboratory Techniques and Safety

  • Laboratory Techniques
    • Learning basic laboratory techniques for experiments.
    • Understanding laboratory safety protocols and procedures.
  • Laboratory Experiments
    • Conducting hands-on experiments to apply chemistry concepts.
    • Analyzing and interpreting data from experiments.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will have a solid understanding of fundamental chemistry concepts and will be able to apply them to real-world scenarios. They will have developed strong problem-solving skills and gained experience in laboratory experiments and data analysis. This course aims to prepare students for further studies in chemistry or related scientific fields.
